Blog swaps are an increasingly popular way to get to know folks around the blogosphere, and have fun. However, it seems there is some mystery around how these swaps happen, so we thought we'd clear it all up for you.
Q) How do you pick a theme?
A) We ask: Would it be fun? Can bloggers afford that? Would people from all over the nation be able to do that? Can that be shipped?
Examples of past suggestions that were nixed for practicality reasons, are: Sock Hop Swap, Wino Swap, and Pet Pals Swap.
Q) How do you pair swappers?
A) We try to pair swappers who have basic lifestyles and/or hobbies in common. It is a delicate and scientific process, but the aim is to introduce like-minded bloggers, in the hope that they'll form a friendship.
Q) Why do I have to make a post about it?
A) The first post is to help spread the word- the more folks that are in the swap, the more likely you'll meet a new bloggy friend! This is why we require it within 3 days of being accepted into the swap, so folks can still participate after they read about it on your blog.
The recap/show-off post is to show off what you received, so your partner knows that you got the package and are enjoying it, and to inspired other swappers on goodie and wrapping ideas.
Q) What if the swap posts don't fit with my blog theme?
A) A great way to work this into your blog post schedule is to put it into your weekly meme, be it confessional, weekly recap, goals, etc.
Q) How do you keep people from flaking on their partner?
A) There's no way to prevent a flaker from flaking, BUT our Swap Angels are always on stand-by to send a replacement package to a swapper who was flaked on.
No one who participates in our swaps will ever end up empty-handed.
No one who participates in our swaps will ever end up empty-handed.
Q) What tips do you have for someone who wants to host a swap?
A) The key is organization, and planning ahead. We plan our swaps to the tiniest detail, months in advance.
Also, it's very important to set realistic parameters for the swap, in terms of finances and timing. Most folks need 1-2 weeks to shop for their partner, for instance, and you need to assume shipping costs will be $12-$20.
And the most important thing is to remember that swaps are all about having fun and getting to know other bloggers!
If you have any additional blog swap questions not covered here, feel free to ask them in the comments, or email us!
No questions just a big thank you for all your hard work.
